First edition of art director Ladislav Sutnar and research director Knud Lonberg-Holm’s landmark exposition on information design and visual communication, published in 1950 by Sweet’s Catalog Service (a division of F.W. Dodge Corp) as an expanded sequel to their acclaimed Catalog Design of 1944. With a short preface by Chauncey L Williams, General Manager of Sweet’s, and book design by Sutnar. Oblong 4to (l12.5” x 9.5”), spiral bound silkscreened cream boards, original tan heavy paper dust jacket with cutout as issued. 108 pages (unpaginated), text in English, blue acetate frontispiece, b/w and color graphics throughout. With sections devoted to: the emergence of new flow patterns; visual features (typography, pictures and charts, covers); design development (page organization, catalog organization, file organization); and function, flow, and form; and a checklist for the development of catalog design. A remarkable contribution to the field of visual communication, and still relevant 75 years after publication. Scarce, as published in an unstated edition of fewer than 1000 copies. Board partially detached from spiral binding. Slight wave to textblock. Moderate rubbing and chipping to extremities. Bumping and chipping to price-clipped dj. Several closed tears to front cover, repaired with tape on verso. Limited damp staining to front board and front cover. Now protected in a mylar cover.
