First edition of Carl Dair’s foundational text on typographical design, published in 1952 by Pellegrini & Cudahy In New York City. Oblong 8vo (8.75” x 5.35”) wire spiral bound with printed wrappers. 128 pages, fully illustrated. Dair (1912-1967) was a Canadian graphic designer, teacher, type designer, and author. Internationally known, he developed visual design principles for typography still in use today. His magnum opus, Design with Type, proved influential when first published, and more so through subsequent printings and editions. Per liner notes, it is “the first book in English to deal with type as a design material. It is also the first book to discuss typographic design in a contemporary sense, applying the Bauhaus principles to the problem of commercial printing in a completely practical, workable way.” Designed by Dair, the book includes typographic examples by Saul Bass, Leo Lionni, Maximillien Vox, Kurt Volk, Wim Crouwell, Massin, W.J. H. Sandberg, Jean Carlu, H. N. Werkman, Jan Tschichold, Franco Grignani and many others. Slight bowing to textblock and front board. Light bumping and rubbing to extremities.
