[1st ed] On the Way to The Gates: Central Park, New York City (Inscribed)

$600.00

First edition monograph on the lead-in to the hanging of The Gates in Central Park in April 2004, published ahead of the installation itself and in conjunction with an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Reproduces hundreds of preparatory drawings and mixed-media pieces executed by Christo to demonstrate what the final installation would look like, and likely to keep funding flowing. With text by Jonathan Fineberg and interviews with Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Published in 2004 by Yale University Press in association with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 4to (12” x 11”), hardcover with pictorial dust jacket, 213 pages, illustrated throughout in color and b/w. Inscribed by Christo and Jeanne Claude in orange crayon on the title page to graphic designer and photograph collector David Leigh at the book launch held on May 26, 2004 at Ursus Books in New York City. Leigh was a friend of the artists and a mainstay on their mailing list. With a piece of the orange fabric used for The Gates laid in, along with an invitation card to the book signing and an announcement card for the museum exhibition. Included too is a snapshot of the artists at Ursus Books the day before the event. Scarce thus. Minor bumping and rubbing to dj. Otherwise NF.
