Alexey Brodovitch's Ballet (Nancy Lassalle's Copy)

$950.00

First edition, reportedly one of 500 copies, of legendary Russian/American photographer and art director Alexey Brodovitch’s Ballet, published in 1945 by J.J. Augustin. Oblong quarto (approximately 8.5 × 11 inches), 144 pages, with 104 black-and-white photographs printed in gravure. Text by Edwin Denby.

A landmark of photographic bookmaking, its grainy, blurred images and rhythmic sequencing translating ballet’s movement into the experience of the printed page. Nancy Norman Lassalle’s copy, with her ownership signature, “N. Lassalle,” on the front free endpaper. An early S.A.B. student and lifelong advocate for Balanchine’s work, Lassalle became a founding board member and director emerita of both the School of American Ballet and New York City Ballet.

Binding defective: lacking the front board, spine, and printed jacket; rear board retained but loose and mottled. Text block complete and intact, with toning, minor handling wear, and a short edge tear to the signed endpaper; photographic spreads generally well preserved.
