A Journey to the Centre of the Earth (Deluxe Edition)

$2,250.00

First edition, first state of the deluxe, subscription-only edition of Jules Verne’s second novel, a cornerstone of early science fiction. Published by Scribner Armstrong & Co in late 1874, though undated, with 52 black-and-white wood-engraved illustrations by Edouard Riou. The deluxe edition was printed on heavier paper than the first American edition that preceded it by about a year; it had more pages and more illustrations and featured an ornate cloth binding with gilt stamping. The present example has the first state binding with Scribner Armstrong & Co at the bottom of the spine instead of just Scribner. 8vo, gilt and black decorated pictorial binding on green cloth boards, 413 pages plus 6 pages of ads, 52 b/w illustrations. Lean to spine. Damp staining to upper portion of textblock. Light mottling to front board, extensive mottling and discoloration to lightly warped rear board. Some bumping to extremities and fraying to cloth. Gilt decoration well-preserved, particularly vibrant on front board.
