First edition, first paperback printing of Russian/American poet and essayist Joseph Brodsky’s second major collection in English. 8vo, pictorial wrappers, 151 pages. Published in 1980 by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, seven years before Brodsky received his Nobel Prize in Literature. Boldly signed by the author across the half-title page. A Part of Speech gathers poems written between 1965 and 1978, with translations by Anthony Hecht, George L. Kline, David McDuff, Howard Moss, Derek Walcott, Richard Wilbur, and others.
Front hinge weakened. Light bumping and rubbing to extremities, with small price sticker on front wrapper. A nice copy, distinguished by an unusually large, strong example of Brodsky’s signature directly on the half-title.
