Considerant (1808-1893), leading disciple of Charles Fourier and one of the principal figures of French utopian socialism, traveled through Texas in 1852–53 and subsequently organized the Société de Colonisation Européo-Américaine. Its efforts resulted in La Réunion, the short-lived experimental colony established in 1855 on the Trinity River at present-day Dallas.
Bibliographically, the Quatrième Partie is distinct from the larger Au Texas and is complete in 113 pages with the terminal “Tableau de Conversion de Dollars en Francs et Vice Versa.” No maps were issued with this separately published supplement; the folding maps sometimes associated with the title belong to the principal Au Texas. The rear wrapper advertises that larger work, describing it as accompanied by maps of the United States and Texas—a useful contemporary confirmation of the relationship between the two publications.
