C.F. Christensen Mobelfabrik (1974 Catalog Featuring Designs by Illum Wikkelso)
Catalog presenting four modular design groups by renowned mcm Danish designer Illum Wikkelso (1919-1999), produced by the Danish firm C.F. Christensen Mobelfabrik and published circa 1974. Laid in are two typed and signed letters on Christensen letterhead dated to 1974, plus a single two-sided spec sheet, folded, for the Plexus Group. Included is the “bestseller and very popular” Plexus grouping, a stately series of solid wood, caning, and upholstery; and the Venus group in solid teak oak and rosewood with upholered cushions. Both of these groups retain a presence in the vintage design market on platforms such as 1stdibs and Chairish. Less commonly seen then or now are the Campus/Sixtus group—described in the catalog as one of WIkkelso’s “least traditional designs” and the similarly progressive Discus group. Sixtus, unsurprisingly, is based on hexagonal shapes in white or black lacquered wood with starkly contrasting fabrics (black on white, orange on black). Discus seating features minimalist but graphically striking forms of teak, rosewood, or black-stained oak plywood. Rare to the current market, these last two groups are shown in full-blown 70’s modular settings. On the last page of the catalog are bar carts by Henning Korch and Johs. Andersen and a sculptural wooden cocktail table representative of Wikkelso’s earlier work for Christensen. Square 8vo (8.25” x 8.25”), pictorial stiff wrappers, 12 semigloss pages, full color photos and layouts throughout. Text in Danish, English, German, and French. Laid in are two typed and signed letters on Christensen letterhead dated to 1974, plus a single two-sided spec sheet, folded, for the Plexus Group. Light bumping and rubbing to extremities, with chipping to spine. Content NF.
