Da Margine a Centro/The Margin Moves to the Middle (Inscribed)
First edition of Primo Foglio No. 2, published in Rome in 1993 by 2RC Edition d’Arte. An uncommon volume by photographer and critic Milton Gendel (1918–2018), reflecting upon a career spent documenting the artistic and intellectual exchanges between postwar Italy and the United States. Born in New York and resident in Rome from 1949 onward, Gendel occupied a unique position within the postwar art world, writing for ARTnews while photographing generations of artists, collectors, writers, and cultural figures associated with the Roman and international avant-gardes. Prior to his move to Italy, Gendel was connected to André Breton's Surrealist circle in New York and maintained lifelong ties to the American art world. 8vo (6.75” x 9.75”), pictorial wrappers, approximately 26 pages, b/w illustrations throughout. Text in Italian and English. Inscribed by Gendel on the title page. A thoughtful and increasingly desirable publication documenting one of the most perceptive visual witnesses to postwar Italian culture. Slight lean to spine. Light rubbing and chipping to extremities, with mild bumping to top edge of front wrapper and first leaf.
