First edition, first printing (number line to 1). Published in 1991 by Atheneum. 8vo, hardcover in dust jacket. Inscribed by the author Paule Marshall on the title page, "For Nefertiti / Paule Marshall / Oct '91," to artist Nefertiti Goodman, wife of Nikolai Goodman and daughter-in-law of poet Denise Levertov. Additionally inscribed by Levertov on the facing leaf, "With love from / Denise xxxx / Christmas 1991." The dating strongly indicates that Levertov procured the newly published book, personally inscribed by Marshall to Nefertiti in October, for presentation to her daughter-in-law that Christmas. A particularly evocative literary association linking two major American women writers and the Levertov-Goodman family. Jacket with rubbing and soiling, light edge wear, and short closed tear/crease at lower front panel; volume sound and clean. A distinctive double-presentation copy with excellent provenance. Minor bumping to board, otherwise near fine.. Light bumping and rubbing to dust jacket with 1” closed tear to bottom edge of front cover.
