David Smith 1906-1965: A Retrospective Exhibition (Dore Ashton's Copy)
Catalog for the first major posthumous retrospective of David Smith’s work, with an introduction by editor Jane Harrison Cone, writings by Smith, a Katherine Kuh interview, chronology and bibliography. Published in 1966 by the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University. 8vo (6.75 × 9 inches), pictorial wrappers, 107 pages, black-and-white illustrations. Art critic Dore Ashton’s extensively used working copy, with numerous manuscript underlinings, brackets, arrows and marginal notes, together with her original paper and Post-it indexing tabs. Ashton’s annotations concentrate particularly on Smith’s artistic formation and sources, including Picasso and González, Stuart Davis, Cahiers d’Art, and the development of his welded sculpture. A compelling working document from the library of Dore Ashton. Light rubbing to extremities, with creasing to spine and bottom corner of front wrapper. Projecting tabs variously worn, all preserved as found.
