Dubliners (1922 Egoist Press Edition)
Third British edition of this collection of fifteen short stories by James Joyce, published in 1922 in London by The Egoist Press. According to Bonhams, “Grant Richards originally printed 1,250 sets of sheets for the 1914 first edition of Dubliners , but only produced (approximately) 746 bound copies from them. About 500 sets of sheets were sent to B. W. Huebsch in the U.S. for the 1916 first American edition, and a subsequent unknown number for a second American edition in 1917. Grant Richards thus ran out of English sheets, but was pressured by Joyce to release a second English edition, forcing Richards to import new sheets printed by Huebsch. A very small number of them were bound up by Richards to satisfy their contractual obligations with Joyce. The third (Egoist Press) English edition was also bound from imported sheets from Huebsch, but they mistakenly marked them as Second edition on the copyright page. 8vo, publisher’s green cloth stamped in gilt on the spine, 288 pages. Lacking the highly scarce dust jacket. Slight lean to spine. Binding somewhat shaken; split at title page only. Fraying to spine ends and corners;; closed tear to top of front joint. Moderate scratching and mottling to boards.
