Humbug. Bound Volume Containing Complete First Comic-Format Run (Issues 1-9)

$400.00

Bound volume of Humbug magazine. 8vo (6.75” x 9.5”), contemporary cloth binding titled Humbug on upper cover, illustrations throughout. Contains the complete run of issues 1–9, August 1957 through May 1958 (monthly except for March 1958), with all original color covers preserved. Edited by Harvey Kurtzman following his departure from MAD, and featuring the original creative nucleus of Will Elder, Jack Davis, Al Jaffee, Arnold Roth, R.O. Blechman, Wally Wood, and others. One of the landmark independent satirical magazines of the 1950s, representing Kurtzman's bridge between MAD and Help!. The first nine comic-format issues, preceding the final two oversized magazine-format numbers, are increasingly difficult to assemble complete. A handsome contemporary bound volume preserving the original covers and all editorial matter. Light fraying to cloth, with some soiling to rear board. Otherwise near fine, taking into account the inherent fragility of the paper.
