Irving Penn: Photographs in Platinum Metals--Images 1947-1975 (Inscribed by both Irving and Lisa Fonssagrives Penn)

$750.00

Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of Irving Penn’s experimental platinum-emulsion photographs held at New York City’s Marlborough Gallery from September 8-October 11, 1977. With a prefatory note by Penn and additional texts by Henry Geldzahler and John Szarkowski. Small 4to (8.5” x 11”), 32 unnumbered pages, illustrated with b/w photos throughout and with a checklist at the end. Inscribed by Irving Penn on the title page and by his wife and muse Lisa Fonssagrives Penn on the page bearing a portrait of her. Lisa Fonssagrives (1911-1992) was a Swedish-born fashion model, dancer, sculptor and photographer who came to the U.S. in 1939 and was credited as being the first supermodel. She married Penn in 1950. She was photographed by (among others) George Hoyningen-Huene, Man Ray, Erwin Blumenfeld, George Platt Lynes, Horst P. Horst, Edgar de Evia, and Richard Avedon. Her image appeared on the cover of magazines including Town & Country, Life, Time, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. Irving Penn’s inscription enhances the present copy of this catalog, but the additional and more elusive signature of Lisa Fonssagrives Penn marks this copy as truly remarkable. Some bumping and rubbing to extremities.
