[Limited 1st ed] Peekskill: USA. A Personal Experience (With three signatures)

$1,000.00

First edition account of the 1949 Peekskill “incidents” written by historian and novelist Howard Fast (whose historical novel, Spartacus—basis for the 1960 Stanley Kubrick film—would be published shortly thereafter), dedicated to renowned singer, actor, and activist Paul Robeson, and with an introduction by William L. Patterson, executive secretary of the Civil Rights Congress. Published in 1951 by Civil Rights Congress. One of only 500 specially bound copies, this one signed on the lined half-title page by Robeson, Fast, and Patterson (Patterson’s signature is not present on all listed copies). Inked limitation number ‘5’ to lower corner of first blank leaf. 8vo, hardcover with dust jacket, 127 pages plus 8 pages of b/w photos documenting the attacks on Robeson and others. Handsomely signed, befitting its presumed early place in the sequence (#5), with an especially bold Paul Robeson signature at the top. Front hinge partially split from the bottom. Creasing to front pastedown and rear fly leaf. Binding slightly shaken. Considerable chipping to mildly rubbed dj, partially split from the top at front flap, with 2” open tear to top edge of front cover and 1” open tear to spine tail.
