Macy's Giant New-Nation Celebration (Yippie Handbill)
Youth International Party (Yippie) mimeographed handbill distributed to promote a planned anti-consumer protest at Macy’s flagship New York store followed by a gathering in the Central Park Sheep Meadow on June 8, 1968. The disruptive event was originally planned as a “Loot-in” inspired by the civil unrest that followed the April 4 assassination of Martin Luther King, but given the tensions in New York City surrounding the occupation of Columbia University in April and May, and legal advice pointing to serious repercussions, the Yippies first softened the language and then canceled the event. The present handbill-a highly scarce piece of ephemera—is all that remains of this envisioned episode of anti-capitalist guerrilla theater. 8vo (8.5” x 11”), printed in black on white stock, recto only. Now protected in a rigid acrylic sleeve. Sheet toned and mildly rubbed, with light creasing and chipping to left edge.
