Paul Rand: Thoughts on Design (First Edition)
Hardcover first edition (stated) of this classic work. 160 pages, 4to, black cloth decorated in gilt, dust jacket, with 94 half-tone illustrations and 8 color plates. Published by Wittenborn and Company in 1947. Trilingual edition, with French and Spanish translations at back. A seminal statement of the principles of modernist graphic design-- arguably the most important work published on graphic design in America in the twentieth century, and certainly one of the most sought-after--by one of the most important designers of the century. With an introduction b E. Mcknight Kauffer. A nice first edition copy of this hard-to-find volume with the scarce photographically printed dust jacket with its iconic wrap-around illustration (based on a Rand fabric pattern). P.O. signature to corner of flyleaf. Gentle bumping to extremities. Binding somewhat shaken. Hinges partially split; bubbling to rear pastedown. Mild foxing to top edge, as well as first and last three leaves. Light rubbing and chipping to mildly foxed dj, with discreet creasing and closed tears to edges; 1.5” tape repair to verso.
