First American edition (and first edition in English) of Wassily Kandinsky’s seminal pictorial treatise, published in 1947 by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, following its initial publication in 1926 in German as the ninth of fourteen Bauhaus Books. Edited and prefaced by Hilla Rebay, German/American baroness, artist, co-founder and director of the Guggenheim Museum, as part of her mission to introduce Kandinsky’s ideas to an American audience. Translated by Rebay and American Bauhausler Howard Dearstyne. Printed at the Cranbrook Press, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. 8vo, hardcover with gilt lettering and pictorial pastedown, 200 pages, b/w illustrations and diagrams, plus one in color. Very minor rubbing to boards and some fading to gilt at spine. Contents pristine. A lovely copy of this pioneering modernist work, scarce thus. From the collection of American artist Steven Wheeler, with his typed name pasted in on the inside front cover.
