Portaits of Artists by Leonard Baskin
First separate printing of this Leonard Baskin portfolio originally appearing in The Massachusetts Review, Vol. V, Not 1, Autumn 1963, and an early manifestation of Baskin’s sustained engagement with the portraiture of artists, later developed in Laus Pictorum. 8vo, printed wrappers, unpaginated. With an introductory essay, “The Necessary Image: From the Iconologia of Leonard Baskin,” by Sidney Kaplan, and 19 portraits of artists. Includes an original wood engraving of Courbet, printed from the block by Baskin’s Gehenna Press and appearing here for the first time; the portraits of Géricault and Elsheimer are also reproduced here for the first time. Light bumping and rubbing to extremities. A sound, complete copy of an uncommon Baskin/Gehenna Press production.
