Pourquoi des Architectes (First Edition, Inscribed to Thierry Despont)

$325.00

First edition of Andre Bruyere’s architectural manifesto, published in Paris in 1968 by Jean-Jacques Pauvert. 4to (8.5” x 9.75”), printed boards, 246 pages, illustrated throughout with photographs, drawings, plans, and diagrams. Text in French. Inscribed by Bruyere on the front free endpaper: “En homage a Ann et Thierry…amities/A Bruyere/1981.”

An exceptional association copy linking two generations of French architectural culture. Inscribed by the visionary architect André Bruyère (1912-1998) to the celebrated architect and designer Thierry Despont (1948-2023) and his first wife, Ann Robinson. The inscription, written in an intimate and informal mode, proposes that they dine together "début avril," preserving a moment of friendship between one of postwar France's most idiosyncratic architectural thinkers and a future master of luxury interiors and historic restoration.

Published on the eve of May 1968, Pourquoi des Architectes is Bruyère's major manifesto, a richly designed synthesis of architectural theory, autobiography, and project presentation. Rejecting orthodox modernism in favor of a sensuous, poetic, and often biomorphic architecture, Bruyère articulated here many of the ideas that would culminate in his celebrated egg-shaped projects and other visionary schemes. The volume itself, with its striking typography and sophisticated graphic design by Le Breton, stands as a notable artifact of late-1960s French design culture. Binding somewhat shaken. Hinges weakened. Bumping and rubbing to extremities, with chipping to top edge of front board and front joint. Moderate closed tears to spine head.
