Professor Max Burchartz zu seinem 70. Geburtstag (Inscribed)
An elegantly designed testimonial and compact retrospective devoted to Max Burchartz (1887–1961), the influential German modernist designer, typographer, painter and longtime professor at the Folkwangschule. Published in 1957 by the Folkwangschule fur Gestaltung in Essen in commemoration of his 70th birthday. 6.75” x 11.75”, embossed wrappers over flexible covers, unpaginated, with portrait frontispiece and 14 color and b/w plates tipped in, recto only. Number 24 of 250 copies. Inscribed by Burchartz on the front free endpaper, warmly addressing “der lieben Hedy,” signing “Dein Max,” and dated Essen, August 4, 1957—just one week after the artist’s 70th birthday.
Illustrated with examples spanning his painting, typography, advertising and exhibition graphics, photography, product and interior design, including his celebrated 1931 Kunst der Werbung poster. With appreciations by Hermann Schardt, Jörg Lampe and Jean Gebser. Burchartz was an important conduit between the experimental typography and Constructivist tendencies of the interwar avant-garde and postwar German design education. The intimate, contemporaneous presentation inscription considerably enhances an already scarce limited publication. Light bumping and rubbing to edge-chipped dust jacket. Contents near fine.
