Rassegna della Stampa. Alexandre Iolas presenta Andy Warhol: Il Cenacolo
Documentary record of Andy Warhol's final exhibition, produced in 1987 by Credit Valtellinese in conjunction with Alexandre Iolas’s celebrated Il Cenacolo exhibition at the Refettorio delle Stelline, Milan. 4to, 62 leaves printed recto only and stapled upper left. Text in Italian. Printed by Ramponi-Sondrio. This substantial publication assembles more than sixty pages of contemporary Italian newspaper and magazine coverage devoted to Warhol's reinterpretations of Leonardo's Last Supper. Reproduced in facsimile are articles from major publications including La Repubblica, Il Manifesto, Flash Art, Amica, Epoca, and others, preserving the critical reception of the exhibition as it unfolded before the public. Rather than ending with the January 1987 opening, though, the dossier continues through the aftermath of Warhol's sudden death on February 22, incorporating obituary notices, memorial tributes, and reflections by figures at the center of the postwar art world. Among the later inclusions are a contemporary account of Warhol's death, a lengthy retrospective assessment by Natalia Aspesi, and a moving remembrance by Leo Castelli, the dealer whose gallery helped define the international reception of Pop Art. Issued for institutional, journalistic, and promotional use rather than commercial sale, the Rassegna della Stampa survives today far less frequently than the standard Il Cenacolo catalogue. It chronicles a singular moment: Warhol's last major exhibition, mounted opposite Leonardo's original masterpiece, during the final collaboration between Warhol and Alexandre Iolas, the man who gave him his first solo show in 1952. First leaf detached, with 2” open tear to top right corner. Light bumping and rubbing to extremities. Now in a tri-fold protective mylar cover.
