Scarabaeus Ltd Brochure

$275.00

Promotional literature for American retailer, curator, author, and impresario George Beylerian’s Scarabaeus, an avant-garde design emporium located on E 60th Street in NYC that opened in 1964 and lasted (probably) into the mid-1970’s. Along with Charles Stendig, Beylerian (b. 1935) was a tastemaker who helped introduce and promote European and American progressive and Radical design to the broader American market. Scarabeaus boasted a highly curated collection of Milanese Modern design along with work in plastic from Kartell and analogous items from Europe and the U.S. Included in the nine artfully arranged vignettes in the brochure showcasing 78 objects are a Gherpe lamp from Superstudio, Tensegrity lamp by Peter Hamburger, Bulb lamp by Ingo Maurer, floor lamp by Neal Small, Maja lamp by Studio Luce, Flower Pot lamp by Verner Panton, lounge chair by Rodney Kinsmen, Cubo cushion by Johannes Larsen, Dondolo rocker by Gae Aulenti, plexiglas stool by Neal Small, plastic chair by Joe Colombo, Floris chair by Gunter Beltzig, plastic stacking tables by Vico Magistretti, nest of plastic stacking tables by Gianfranco Frattini, Cubismo desk sculpture by Milton Glaser, Brionvega radio by Marco Zanuso, Pyramid mirror wall sculpture by Verner Panton, and a Brionvega stereo phonograph by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. Square 8vo (9” x 9”), photographic wrappers, 10 unnumbered pages, b/w photographic reproductions. With color options and pricing for each entry. The graphic design by Onnig and Alan Mittleman makes dramatic use of the black-and-white format and features a cover shot of a Bubble mirror by George Beylerian worthy of Enzo Mari. A highly scarce and visually striking document of a transitory but innovative and significant design space, founded by the man who would go on to establish Material ConneXion. Light bumping and rubbing to extremities, with chipping to spine and small crease to bottom corner of front wrapper.
