Silt Pile No. 7: Paolo Soleri Studios at Cosanti Foundation--Original Architectural Workshop Poster and Prospectus, 1967
Original large-format architectural poster and workshop prospectus, produced in 1967 by Paolo Soleri Studios at Cosanti Foundation. 35 × 17.5 inches. Printed in black on cream-colored paper, with elaborate architectural plans, topographical drawings, bold modernist typography, and extensive programmatic text in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
An exceptional document of Soleri's formative architectural experiments at Cosanti, preceding the establishment of Arcosanti in 1970. Issued for the seventh annual Silt Pile workshop, held in conjunction with Arizona State University’s College of Architecture, the poster articulates Soleri's developing philosophy of architecture as human ecology, integrating experimental construction, environmental inquiry, and collective labor. The striking graphic composition incorporates detailed plans of structures built at Cosanti between 1959 and 1966, including the Ceramic Studio, North Studio, Metal Foundry, House, Workshop, and monumental 29-ton lift-slab canopy, together with a chronological inventory of the complex's development. A prominent arrow announces the proposed 1967 Wirand Concrete Apse. Intricate architectural linework and densely stippled topographical fields create an organic composition in which buildings and landscape appear inseparable. Simultaneously an architectural survey, historical record, and educational prospectus, the poster documents the material and philosophical foundations of Soleri's subsequent arcological vision. A significant example of postwar experimental architectural graphics. Acquired at Cosanti during visits to Arizona in the 1960’s by the previous owner, a New York City architect. Light bumping and chipping with a few very small closed edge tears and minimal damp staining. Overall, a well-preserved example of a highly scarce and ephemeral item. Photographed in a mylar sleeve. Will ship in a cardboard tube.
