Snow Job: Poems, 1946-1959
Early collection of poems by anarchic satirist Tuli Kupferberg, a key figure in the Beat Generation and counterculture movements. Self-published in a small run in 1959 by Poets Union Press (Pup Press). Kupferberg (1923-2010) was an American counterculture activist, poet, singer, editorial cartoonist, comic artist, columnist, publisher, and co-founder in 1964 of the rock band The Fugs. He moved in overlapping circles of the Beat Generation, Lower East Side avant-garde, and 60’s counterculture, collaborating or associating with figures such as Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, Ed Sanders, Hettie Jones, Gregory Corso, Jack Kerouac, Donna di Prima, William S. Burroughs, Amiri Baraka, and Taylor Mead. The present chapbook was designed by Kupferberg’s wife Sylvia Topp, herself a writer, editor, and publisher. 8vo, staple-bound illustrated wrappers, 48 unnumbered pages. Rare Beat-era small press collectible, reflecting the experimental poetry scene of the 1950s. Foxing to wrappers, not affecting interior. Light bumping and creasing to extremities, with toning to margins.
