Tavoli e Piani d'Appoggio (1948)--Leo Jiranek's Personal Copy
First edition of Quaderni di Domus No 8, edited by Luciano Canella and Renato Radici and published in 1948 in Milan by Editoriale Domus. 8vo (7.75 × 9.25 inches), pictorial wrappers, 143 numbered pages, profusely illustrated in black-and-white. An important postwar survey of modern table design, documenting international developments in furniture design, from European functionalism to more experimental forms and constructions. Published as part of the influential Quaderni di Domus series, under the direction of Carlo Pagani. Features work by Alvar Aalto, Franco Albini, Marcel Breuer, Charles Eames, Ignazio Gardella, Walter Gropius, Carl Koch, Ludwig Kosman, Mogens Lassen, Le Corbusier, Vico Magistretti, Carlo Mollino, Richard Neutra, Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouve, Eliel Saarinen, Richard Stein, Gerald Summers, Vittorio Vigano, and Marco Zanuso, among many others. Also includes Isamu Noguchi’s legendary biomorphic coffee table for the A. Conger Goodyear house, though with an attribution to the house’s architect, Edward Durrell Stone.
From the working library of Leo Jiranek (1900–1990), the influential American furniture and industrial designer, with his handwritten name and date 1948 on the front cover, a second signature dated 1955 on the half-title, and his professional ownership stamp below. Contemporaneously deemed the "Dean of Furniture Designers," Jiranek designed for leading American manufacturers including Heywood-Wakefield, Lane, Bassett, and Thomasville and played an important role in the professionalization of American industrial design. A particularly appropriate association, connecting a significant Italian modernist design reference with a leading American practitioner.
Spine split; binding loosened. Some bumping and chipping to extremities. Bumping and chipping to dj. Missing spine; front flap partially split.
