The Architectural Vision of Paolo Soleri: Corcoran Gallery of Art

$350.00

Eight-page double-sided typescript exhibition-floor guide, stapled with a four-page Cosanti Foundation prospectus; accompanied by a color Cosanti Foundation postcard dated 1967. Guide 8½ x 11 inches. Exhibition guide published jointly by the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Cosanti Foundation in 1970.

Exceptionally ephemeral documentation from Soleri's major 1970–71 traveling exhibition, opening at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, February 20–April 5, 1970, before traveling to venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. The typescript was evidently produced as an exhibition-floor reference guide rather than a conventional published catalog: fourteen numbered sections correspond directly to models, drawings, architectural projects and locations throughout the installation, discussing Cosanti, Mesa City, bridge projects, Arcologies and Arcosanti. Oversized black sans-serif numerals punctuate the utilitarian typescript, functioning as a distinctive system of exhibition wayfinding.

A contemporary manuscript addition to the heading reads “& The Prudential Insurance Co Present,” suggesting gallery or staff use; its unusually good survival further supports its function as an on-site reference rather than a broadly distributed handout. Appended is a four-page Cosanti Foundation prospectus describing the Foundation's 1969 acquisition of land for Arcosanti, its program for 1970, and opportunities for participation and financial support—documentation from the tine-frame when Arcology was moving from theory toward construction.

Accompanied by an earlier 1967 Cosanti Foundation postcard, its boldly colored systems diagram adapted from Soleri's Arcology studies, with Foundation statement and appeal for support verso. Together the two pieces trace a consequential three-year period in Soleri's work, from the promotion of Arcology before publication of his MIT Press book to its major institutional presentation and the beginnings of Arcosanti. Some bumping and rubbing to postcard. Creasing to printout, with light toning to last page.
