The Road Commissioner & Other Stories (Inscribed to Dore Ashton)
First edition of Barbara Howes’s collection of short stories with illustrations by Gregory Smith, published in 1983 by The Stinehour Press of Lunenburg, Vermont. 8vo (6.25 × 9.5 inches), brown boards with black cloth spine, gilt lettering; color block-print illustrations. One of 500 copies.
A notable association copy, inscribed jointly by Howes and Smith on the half-title: “for Dore + for Matti—with love—Barbara & [Greg].” Presented to the influential art critic Dore Ashton and her husband, the Israeli-born writer and educator Matti Megged. Smith, the book’s illustrator, was Howes’s son. An unusually warm double presentation copy linking the literary and artistic circles surrounding Ashton. From the estate of Dore Ashton. Near fine, without the ephemeral glassine jacket.
