Van Cliburn: Moscow Triumph and American Reception. Four Contemporary Ephemeral Publications, 1958
Four pieces documenting Cliburn’s emergence as an international celebrity following his victory at the first Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Includes: Van Cliburn (New York: Lou Dunetz and Paul Lovett, [1958]), an illustrated promotional brochure designed by George Tscherny, square 4to, 11 x 11 inches, pictorial wrappers, unpaginated, with photographs, press tributes, and Cliburn’s April 17, 1958 dispatch from Moscow, reprinted with permission of the United Press. Tscherny’s design combines a dramatically cropped photographic cover, vertical titling, angled newspaper headlines, and a credits page whose alternating black-and-white bands suggest a piano keyboard. Together with the May and June 1958 issues of Steinway News, each 4 pages, 8.5 x 11 inches, featuring Cliburn’s victory and subsequent New York reception; and the Orchestral Society of Westchester program for October 26, 1958, Scarsdale High School Auditorium, with Simon Asen conducting and Cliburn performing Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A Minor. The latter printed on rust-orange stock, folded in thirds to six panels, 6 x 9 inches closed. All acquired from the same source. Brochure toned, with light bumping and rubbing two extremities; newsletters lightly toned and folded, with scattered spotting and localized staining to June; concert program with a small tear to back page. Good to very good overall. Price is for the group of four items.
