First edition, first printing, stated, with “D-O” code on copyright page, of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s third book, published by Harper & Row in 1964, shortly before he won that year’s Nobel Peace Prize. 8vo, hardcover in original first-state dust jacket, retaining the $3.50 price and “0664” code on front flap; with a central section of black-and-white photographs. King’s landmark account of the Birmingham campaign and the urgency of the Civil Rights struggle, including the first complete book publication of “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” An apparent bindery/production flaw affects the preliminary leaves through approximately p. 6, several leaves creased and folded at the lower fore-edge; thereafter the text block is clean and tight. Minor bumping and rubbing to extremities. Light bumping and rubbing to edge-chipped dust jacket with minor closed tears to top edge of front cover, and small open tear to spine head. A solid, unrestored example of the true first printing in the correct first-state jacket.
